November brings with it an uncomfortable drop in temperature, unpredictable weather, and an overall gloomy mood. The cold weather is here to stay, and while we’re all going to miss the warmth and sun of the summer months, it’s time for us to get ready for the Canadian winter. Maybe you’re already in holiday mode and focusing on what December will bring, or maybe you’re struggling with the seasonal transition and thinking back to how fun the summer months were, but here at Clique we’re fully focused on this season and what your hair needs most as the temperature drops. We’re focusing on how cold weather can damage your hair – and what you can do to protect it.

Colder weather can cause brittle, dry, and frizzy hair, all hair characteristics that we hate experiencing. The cold outdoor air combined with the heated indoors leaves your hair strands confused, damaged, and overall very unhappy.

You deserve the healthiest and most beautiful hair, so protecting it through the cold winter months is an absolute necessity. We want to help you with that! Whether you’re looking for the best at-home hair protection tips, or are looking to book a treatment with us to keep that hair healthy, we’ve put together a cold weather hair protection guide. Here’s what you need to do to get your hair winter-ready.

What to do at home:

Use a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner

The Canadian winter is notorious for drying your hair out, so battle the damage with a great moisturizing shampoo & conditioner combo. Locking in your natural moisture is key to keeping your hair happy this winter, so washing your hair with a moisturizing line is where you need to start. Pro tip: don’t wash your hair too often so that you can keep the natural oils in it as long as possible, avoiding more chances of drying your strands out.

Use a moisturizing hair masque

Whether you make one from scratch or purchase one from a reputable (and clean!) company, adding a mask to your haircare routine will work wonders on your hair this winter. Rehydrate those thirsty strands and lock in that moisture – hair masques give your hair the chance to really soak in all that moisturizing goodness. Plus, they’re a great addition to your routing to help with the frizziness that comes along with colder weather!

Use a protectant spray

A tip that we all know well when it comes to using hot tools for styling is to protect your hair from heat. But did you know that this tip also applies to colder weather? It’s true! Your hair needs protection from all extreme temperatures, so when that weather starts to get colder, it’s time to use some protectant spray – a moisturizing one preferably! It’s another product that will help lock in that moisture while also delivering protection from further damage. Use it on damp or dry hair before styling for the most protection.

What to do in the salon:

Add a bond building treatment to your next appointment

Our hair contains millions of bonds – they’re what make up our hair’s structure and texture. Broken hair bonds result in damaged hair, and this is exactly what we don’t want happening this winter. Enter: the bond building treatment.

This treatment works to repair those broken bonds, leaving you with beautiful and undamaged hair. It’s the TLC that winter hair craves. The bond building treatment is most effective when added on to a hair cut or colour appointment, and only takes 20 to 25 minutes. You won’t even notice the extra time, but you’ll definitely notice the healthier hair!

Add a mineral removing treatment to your next appointment

If your hair isn’t feeling as bright and shiny as usual, and it’s feeling heavy even after you wash it, then you might be suffering from mineral buildup! This can be a common problem and is in no way a reflection of your hair hygiene. A mineral buildup can be caused by a number of factors, including water and pollution. The winter weather does your hair no favours for buildup, so it’s a great time to clear it out!

A mineral removing treatment helps to remove the buildup and brings your hair back to its bright, bouncy, and healthy state! It can take anywhere between 5 and 25 minutes, and should be added on to a hair cut or colour appointment. We recommend asking your stylist which mineral removing treatment is best for your unique hair needs.

Add the “treat me” treatment to your next appointment

This is one of our favourites! Inspired by the best skincare practices, the Treat Me treatment enriches your hair with plant-based amino acids, moisturizing alpha hydroxy acid, and plant-derived “super proteins” to help strengthen and repair everyday damage. Knowing how damaging the winter can be to your hair, we love this treatment in the colder months (and even in the hot ones, too!)

It’s a quick treatment, taking between 10 to 15 minutes, and is an easy add-on to your next appointment.

Heading into the colder season means heading into holiday season, and though we know you’ll be focusing on your loved ones, take a second to focus on yourself and your own needs. Treat yourself to a treatment that will not only make you feel like royalty, but will also help bring your hair back to its healthy state. You deserve this!
