Pictures are worth a thousand words… But are they words of substance or deceit?
Let’s set the scene: you’re ready to change up your hair, so where is the first place you will go for inspiration? Is it Google? Pinterest? Yahoo? Your favourite magazine? No matter where you end up, they all have one thing in common: none of these photos are of you.
Now for a disclaimer…
We have access to almost unlimited inspiration on the internet and traditional press and there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with using these sources for inspiration. No one is expected to come up with ideas of for a new hairstyle out of thin air. That would be absolute crazy talk!
But keeping a few key things in mind while you are looking for your new look will help give you confidence that what you are picturing is possible.
Now, there are a few things you should look for to find a look that is obtainable and flattering!
1. Cover it up!
As much as the beautiful people on the internet and your favourite Hollywood celebrities can be inspiring and pleasant to look at, we have to remember their face is not ours. We have our own beauty to focus on! So with that in mind, the biggest tip I can give is to cover that pretty face up so you can focus on the hair. By making sure you are not looking at the person as a whole you can better visualize yourself in the style. Focusing on you and your beauty is what will ensure you are always comfortable and confident in any change you make!
2. More is, well, more
Although more is not always better, when it comes to inspiration photos for your hair, it truly is. The more photos you have, the easier it is to identify what it is you like. More often than not there will be a common theme between the photos. As people, we like what we like and it will show when you present a group of photos.
3. Look for similarities
Finding similar things between the photo and yourself will help you find an ideal style for you! Use that search bar to your advantage. If you have short, thick, curly hair, look it up. If you are concerned about something being age-appropriate (which, in this hairstylist’s opinion, is not something to be focused, on but I digress), search for hairstyles for your age group. Anything you type into a search bar will come up! Think about you and your needs. We are all unique and have individual needs and we need to look for inspiration tailored to us.
At the end of the day, photos are just inspiration or a starting point. Have an in-depth conversation with your stylist about your likes and dislikes. We, as stylists, are here to make you look and feel your most beautiful and that can only happen when everyone is on the same page.
