Life has been (almost) paused for several weeks and when it comes to hair care, that can be an eternity – especially for those who have a regular salon routine.

As much as we would love to have you in and give your hair the love it deserves, we are unable to do it just yet. In return however we have 6 hair care tips for you to give your mane the attention it deserves and keep it healthy while at home.

1. Give your hair a break from using hot tools

From blow-drying to curling and straightening, we put our locks through heat styling quite often. While using heat on your hair is safe with the proper tools and products, doing it often can lead to damage over time such as breakage, dryness and split ends.

Right now is a perfect opportunity to take a break from using hot tools – just like your skin sometimes needs a break from cosmetics, your hair loves it when you go “au naturel” too. Think of letting your hair air dry and skipping the straightener as a mini hair detox!

Our tip: use a hair texturizing spray or mousse when letting your hair air dry to add texture, volume and shape to your look. We recommend using Neuma’s Neustyling Mousse and Neustyling Texturizerfor for lightweight touchable texture and hold. We are currently offering curbside pickup on both products for a safe purchasing experience.

2. If you are blow-drying your hair let it dry naturally to 80%

If letting go of heat styling is much easier said than done for you and you can’t part with the blow dryer, we recommend at least letting your hair dry naturally to 80% to give your cuticles a break.

Letting your hair air-dry might take longer but it can prevent damage in the long run. It can also help your hair feel and look smoother and more hydrated.

Our tip: use an absorbent towel (like your Clique eco towel)  to cut down on the time it takes your hair to dry naturally. Pat your hair gently instead of rubbing, then safely detangle it with a wide toothed comb or your fingers.

3. Perfect time to learn and practice braiding

Allowing your hair to fully or partially dry naturally doesn’t mean you can’t have beautiful styling results. Braiding is the perfect way to let your hair dry naturally and allow it to look fabulous too. It works for all hair types and textures and you can achieve results like beachy waves, extra volume and less frizz.

Our tip: pat dry your hair to remove as much excess water as possible and apply a leave-in conditioner before braiding. This will make hair easier to braid and while giving you a frizz-free defined look once dry. We recommend Neuma’s Reneu Tangle Me Free leave-in conditioner for your perfect braid.

4. Your chance to avoid excessive washing

Shampooing your hair too often can also cause issues for your hair. It can strip off natural oils and give your scalp a dry or tight feeling. In return, your scalp might start producing excess oils to make up for the dryness and replace what was stripped off. The good news is, when we stop shampooing too often, the body balances oil production and we can go longer in between washes. Right now is the perfect time for this!

Our tip: if you wash your hair every day, start by washing it every other day then gradually extend the time between washes. Your hair will naturally produce less and less oils and you will eventually be able to last days in between washes.

  5. Use dry shampoo and be creative with doing quick up-styles

If you are struggling with extending the time between washes, dry shampoo is the perfect solution. It helps absorb oil and leaves your hair fresh and clean as if it was just washed. Neuma’s Reneu Dry Shampoo is our top pick for refreshed, clean locks in seconds. The natural powders of rice and tapioca starch absorb excess oil and odour while creating light volume and maintaining natural shine. It can be used on all hair types and conditions.

Our tip: shake it well, section dry hair and spray the roots in a sweeping motion while holding the spray 6-10 inches away from your head. Brush through and enjoy fabulous hair as is or style it up!

  6. Avoid hair breakage from elastics

If you tend to wear your hair up a lot, it’s important to change your ponytail to avoid breakage from elastics. Switching up ponytail styles does more than just change your look – it’s also great for your hair. Here are a few tips to keep your hair healthy when pulled back:

Tip: Don’t make your ponytail too tight

Too many elastic twists can put pressure on your hair, which in turn can damage it over time. More, the pressure can give you headaches and even hair loss.

Tip: Dry your hair before tying it

Damp and wet hair stretches and is more brittle and fragile, causing it to break easily. Make sure your hair is always fully dry when putting in in a ponytail to maintain it healthy.

Tip: Switch hairstyles

Avoid putting your hair up the same way everyday as it can cause fraying in the same spot. Switch it up from a bun to a ponytail to a braid and anything else your creativity brings up.
